A New Chapter: From Playtime to Pencil Lines
After years spent fostering the creativity of young children, fueled by a lifelong passion for drawing and design, I found myself at a crossroads. With my wife’s encouragement and a hefty dose of nerves, I decided to take the plunge into a new career path. Leaving a job I adored for the great unknown was both terrifying and exhilarating.
Initially, I dove into illustrating buildings and urban scenes—my fascination with architecture and city life gave me my first subjects. There’s something magical about capturing the essence of a bustling street or the quiet elegance of a beautiful building. These urban illustrations have quickly become some of my favorite projects. Each line and shadow allows me to tell a story, bringing to life the intricate details that often go unnoticed.
In my new role as a freelance illustrator/designer, I discovered that drawing and designing for someone else's vision is a uniquely fulfilling experience. It challenges my creativity and sharpens my problem-solving skills. Every design or illustration project becomes a puzzle that I’m eager to piece together, taking the ideas of others and transforming them into visual narratives. The thrill of collaborating with clients and translating their dreams into tangible designs is something I wholeheartedly embrace.
Going it alone—with just my wits, my pen, and my iPad—has certainly been an adventure. At times, it can feel overwhelming. Yet, the independence is empowering. I am charting my course, navigating challenges, and celebrating victories, all while discovering more about my abilities and style.
While my time working with kids was a time I will always look back on with deep appreciation and love, switching careers has been an incredibly fun and rewarding challenge. It's not just about making art; it’s about exploring new ideas and perspectives. Each day brings a fresh opportunity to learn, experiment, and grow.
